A direct ophthalmoscope is a hand-held illuminated microscope that allows the optician to assess the health of the retina and optic nerve. The retina is the light-sensitive point at the back of the eyeball. Evaluation of the retina and optic nerve is important to check for glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration (AMD), diabetic retinopathy, and other potentially sight-threatening eye conditions.
