The remains of the gatehouse to the former site of St Benets Abbey on the Norfolk Broads
The Abbey of St. Benet's Hulme or St. Benet-at-Holme was founded in the 9th century by the hermit Suneman This Abbey was one of the wealthiest Benedictine establishments in the country at one time, although it did decline before the reformation. It was unique in being the only Monastery in Britain not to be included in the dissolution, and instead of closing it in 1536, King Henry V111 appointed Bishop Reppes as Abbot of St. Benet's and further granted him the Abbey and all its properties in return for land owned by the Diocese of Norwich. The new Bishop soon plundered the site and in 1545 the last monk left. All the buildings except the gatehouse were demolished. A mill was subsequently built into the walls of the gatehouse. The Bishop of Norwich still holds the title of Abbot of St. Benet's and a service is held there each year
