Lobar pneumonia. Light micrograph (LM) of lobar pneumonia of the lung. This type of pneumonia results in inflammation of the lung and is most commonly caused by the bacteria Streptococcus pneumoniae. The pathogen is inhaled into a lung segment, or lobe, where it causes the alveoli (air sacs, pink) to become blocked with pus (purple). Penicillin is the drug of choice for treatment. Magnification: x120 when printed at 10 centimetres wide. Human tissue.
