SKIN CANCER, DRAWING
Skin cancer is a tumor which develops on the epidermis or in the skin's pigmentary system. Cancers of the epidermis are the most common. We distinguish two types of epidermal skin cancers: basal cell epitheliomas (basal layer of the epidermis) and squamous cell carcinomas (Malpighian cells). Pigmentary system cancers are known as melanomas. Exposure to the sun increases chances of developing skin cancer. Reducing exposure to the sun and the application of sunscreen are two useful prevention methods. Certain skin types (fair-skinned people and redheads, for example) are more prone to developing skin cancer. Skin cancers are in general treatable by surgery. Chemotherapy may also need to be administered if metastases are present.
