Thomas Brasch was the son of German Jewish Communist emigre parents. Although of bourgeois background, his father, Horst, worked as a toolmaker and chaired the local works council. A member of the Amalgamated Engineering Union (AEU), he was popular in British Communist and trade-union circles. In 1947 Brasch senior decided to return to the Soviet Zone of Germany (later German Democratic Republic (GDR).
