S-curved rice terraces, Bada, Yuanyang County, Yunnan Province, China

It is hard to appreciate the immense scale of the Honghe Hani rice terraces, spectacular terraces that cascade down the slopes of the Ailao Mountains to the banks of the Hong River. The terraces are all the more amazing when you consider they were built over hundreds of years by human labour helped only by water buffalos. This is only a tiny portion of the terraces that stretch over miles and miles of the countryside in Yuanyang County, Yunnan Province, China. They are a UNESCO World Heritage Site as an example of environmental engineering mediated by integrated farming and water management systems.
