More than 5,000 people took part in a ceremony in Moscow's Lubyanka Square on October 29, 2017, to commemorate the victims of political terror during the Communist era. For twelve hours, people read names of those who were killled or disappeared, especially at the height of Stalinist terror in 1937-1938. In Moscow alone, more than 30,000 people were murdered. Reading the names of the victims has become an annual tradition since 2007.

The ceremony takes place next to the first memorial for the victims of political terror, a huge stone brought here in 1990 from the Solovetsky islands in the White Sea, the location of the first Communist concentration camp and part of the camp system that later became known as the Gulag Archipelago. The memorial is situated opposite of the former NKVD/KGB headquarters. The building is still in use by the Russian security service.
