CONSTRUCTION WORK ON THE INTER URBAN RAILWAY,DES MOINES, IOWA In the past few years interurban railway construction hasbeen gradually approaching that of steam roads, but in thecase of the Beaver Valley division of the Inter-Urban Rail-way, Des Moines, la., it would be more exact to say thatsteam-road practice has been followed rather than ap-proached. In fact in every particular the roadbed has beenbuilt in conformity with steam-road practice. The responsi-. CONSTRUCTION AT CURVES bility for such construction rests primarily upon H. H. Polk,president and general manager of the system, through whosecourtesy the main constructive features of the line are herepresented, but the thorough manner in which the details,so far as steam-road practice is concerned, have been car-ried out, is largely due to the fact that Frank S. Cummins,chief engineer of the road, was formerly associated with asteam road. The older lines of the Inter-Urban Railwaywere descrilied at some length in the Street Railway Jour-nal for June 20, 1903. The Beaver Valley division, which isnow completed and in operation as far as Granger, about 18miles northwest of Des Moines, will continue in a northwest-erly direction to Moran Junction, 6 miles beyond Granger,and at this point will branch in a northern and western direc-tion. The branch going west will terminate at Perry, 35miles distant, and the northern line will reach Woodward,27 miles from De
