Before going to SouthAmerica five years ago he was generalsuperintendent of the Jersey CentralTraction Company and the Middlesex& Monmouth Electric, Heat & PowerCompany at Keyport, N. J. Duringthe world war the company was unableto get cars and other equipment fromthe United States or any other foreigncountry and Mr. Mann made severalcars in Lima that are all American T. H. McCAULEY complished largely through a liberalticket policy. In 1918 it was estimatedthat the proportion of riders carried ontickets was at-least 80 per cent. Realization of the possibilities con-tained in the one-man car was largelyresponsible for Mr. McCauleys suc-cess at Calgary. He early conceivedthe idea of rebuilding two-man cars ofthe older types to require the servicesof only one operator. As a result, thewages per car-mile to motormen andconductors decreased from centsin 1913 to cents in 1918, and inthe interim wages had been largelyincreased. Mr. McCauley has had a variedcareer as a utility operator. He wasborn in Peel County, Ont., in 1872. En-tering the employ of the Bell TelephoneCompany at Port Arthur in 1889, heserved as a lineman until 1891, when hewas made local manager for PortArthur and Fort William. Three yearslater he was made superintendent ofthe Port Arthur Street Railway & Elec-tric Light Company. In 1909 he wasappointed genera
