Cleft of the mouth small; maxillary short, broad, scaicely extending beyond the front margin of the orbit. Small teeth in the jaw bones, on the head of the vomer and the palatines; none on the tongue. Dorsal fin long, many rayed; caudal forked. Pseudobranchice well developed; air-bladder very large. Stomach horse-shoe-shaped, pyloric appendages rather numerous.
