Growth of Clay County Banks Twenty years ago there were four banks in Clay County, and their com- bined capital and surplus was $218,- , and the aggregate deposits were $414, The number of banks has increased until there are now 17, and the capital is $740, On the same date, January 1st of the present year, the total amount on de- posit in the banks of the county had grown to $2,966,—more than a seven-fold increase. During the twenty years that have elapsed the banks have paid dividends that amount to more than the banking capital of all of the banks of the coun- ty today. This tells the story of de- velopment and prosperity. Over sixty of the farmers of the county are stockholders of one or more of the banks. Here again is a change from twenty years ago. The oldest bank in the county is the First National of Moorhead, organized in August, 1881, with $50,000 capital stock. On January 1, 1896, the cap-.
