The surveys are in progress for an irrigation canal to runfrom Lake Tulare northward to the San Joaquin River nearMendota, Cal. The canal will be about 80 miles long, andwill supply water for irrigation to a laige area of land inthe San Joaquin Valley. The examinations and testa of timber now in progressiinrler the Forestry Division of the Agricultural Department,Washington, were suspended from January to July of lastyear from want of funds. Mr. B. E. Fernow, Chief of theForestry Division, asked Congress, in a special bill, for anappropriation of $40,000 for this work. This was whollydisallowed in the House, but the Senate added an amend-ment to tlie department bill giving $13,000 to this investi-gation. This was finally cut down in conference to $4,000,which, with some additional funds from the general depart-ment appropriation, constitutes the working
