The heart of Pine Street was buoyant with people renewed their diligence. A minute of thecommittee records that the treasurer had, near thistime, invested a surplus of two thousand dollars ingovernment bonds at eight per cent. This is a verysignificant sidelight. They gladlypaid the expenses of bringing him back to Philadelphia,and treated him with the same royal liberality thatmarked the event of his first appearance among little they thought of the preparation they weremaking for a more sorrowful generosity when theyshould build the tomb over his grave, and give, a purseof a thousand dollars to his bereft widow! Dr. Smith was received again into the Presbytery ofPhiladelphia in April, and installed in June, 1799.
