Before inserting a pessary of any kind, the bladder andbowels should be evacuated, and the patient should reclinewith her hips elevated, with the body low, and the uterusshould be replaced before the pessary is introduced into thevagina. Then an abdominal supporter should be appliedbefore the patient rises. The pessary should be removed andcleansed at least once a week. It should not be worn, in anycase, but a few weeks, as a rule. The Babcock Supporter holds the womb up in a cup- 150 EATON ON DISEASES OF shaped instrument. (See Plate VII.) It is objectionable inretaining the secretions and in being too stiff. The cup is sup-ported by a steel shaft, which is held in position by a beltaround the lower portion of the abdomen. The shaft of steelmay be moulded to the form somewhat. In some old women suffering with prolapse this instrumentis worn with comfort; but ordinarilyit is found that it causes pain and irri-tation. It will sometimes answer agood purpose where the atonic condi-tion of the system is marked, andwhere we can notdo better. The in-strument, if used, should be often re-moved and cleansed.
