BAKER, Cleander, an American Meth-odist bishop; born in Marlow, New Hampshire,July 30, 1812; educated at the Connecticut Wes-leyan University; a teacher in the Vermont Wes-leyan Seminary at Newbury in 1834, and itsprincipal, 1839-44. He took a leading part infounding Methodist theological schools; waschosen a bishop of the Methodist EpiscopalChurch in 1852. His treatise On the Disciplineof the Methodist Episcopal Church still has authorityin his denomination.
