Sharon also known by his diminutive Arik, born Ariel Scheinermann, was an Israeli politician and general who served as the 11th Prime Minister of Israel until he was incapacitated by a stroke. As Defense Minister, Sharon launched an invasion of Lebanon called Operation Peace for Galilee, later known as the 1982 Lebanon War, following the shooting of Israel's ambassador in London, Shlomo Argov.
