Elephantiasis hygiene research. Tubes containing swabs taken from between the toes of patients with elephantiasis. Such patients have grossly swollen limbs and are at risk from skin infections. The swabs will be cultured to test the effectiveness of a medicated soap to improve the hygiene of the patients. Elephantiasis is a symptom of lymphatic filariasis. This disease is caused by parasitic nemotode worms transmitted in larval form by the bite of mosquitoes. The condition is rarely fatal, but causes widespread suffering in tropical areas. Photographed in Haiti.
