Henri de Ruolz (1808-1887), French industrial chemist and Comte de Ruolz-Montchal. De Ruolz discovered in 1841 the process for gilding and silver-plating metals using a voltaic pile, but his patent application was challenged by English industrialist George Elkington. The dispute was resolved and Ruolz continued his research, obtaining as many as seventeen patents relating to the plating of copper, brass, bronze and iron with nickel, and the electrodeposition of silver, platinum and other metals. Artwork from 'Electricite' (1911) by French civil engineer Max de Nansouty (1854-1913), part of the 'Les merveilles de la science' series of 1867-1891 by Louis Figuier.
