Monument to Catalan politician Francesc Macià with the sculpture of La Deesa in the foreground, Plaça de Catalunya, Barcelona

Plaça de Catalunya is a bustling plaza that divides the old town, Ciutat Vella, and the Eixample district and is considered to be the heart of the city. Architects of the calibre of Pere Falqués, Puig i Cadafalch and Francesc de Paula Nebot were involved in the design of the plaza, which also features sculptures by the artists Josep Clarà and Josep Llimona. At one end, you can also admire the monument to the former president of the Catalan Government, Francesc Macià, by the artist Josep Maria Subirachs. A reflecting pool at the base contains a replica of Josep Clarà’s sculpture La Deessa (The Goddess) originally made for the 1929 International Exhibition.
