'...the engines were exhibited completely fitted, with the portion of the vessel that forms the engine-room: the main shaft is in place, with the paddle-wheels [The] marine engines exhibited by Escher, Wyss, and Co., consist of a pair of compound cylinder engines, of 30-horse power, adapted to shallow navigation; these engines weigh, including water in the boilers, about 37½ tons; they are intended to be worked at a pressure of from to five atmospheres, and are guaranteed to work up to 180-horse power, if necessary, with a consumption of 2¼lb. of best Newcastle coal per hour and per indicated horse power, and to propel a a speed of fifteen statute miles per hour. The chief points sought to be obtained in these engines are lightness and simplicity of air-pump and feed-pumps are worked by a small auxiliary inverted steam-cylinder, the exhaust steam from which serves, by means of a blast-pipe in the funnel, to increase the combustion of the coal and the evaporative powers of the boilers'.
