Slave trade in Africa. Illustration of slave traders on the coast of West Africa gathering slaves and separating out women and children, with the men placed on ships. The ships transported hundreds of slaves chained tightly to plank beds. They were held in cargo holds with little room to move, and up to one-third of the slaves died in transit. Scenes such as this were published to gain support for abolitionists who were trying to end slavery and the slave trade. Diagram from 'Bilderbuch fur Kinder' (1805) by German publisher Friedrich Justin Bertuch (1747-1822).
