When one gets an absolutely normal mastoid on one side, and the otherside presents the appearance just described, together with certain clinical signsand symptoms, one is justified in diagnosing acute mastoiditis. Chronic mastoiditis is very typical in a skiagraph. It presents the followingdepartures from the normal: 1. The air cells are completely absent. 2. The petrous bone stands out as a very dense, roughly triangular area,with its apex pointing upwards and backwards. 3. The posterior border of the petrous bone forms part of a sharp crescent-.
