This image may not be used to state or imply ROE endorsement of any company or product The desolate landscape at the 4200m summit of the dormant Mauna Kea volcano in Hawaii, one of the world's best sites for astronomical observations. At right are the small silver dome of the Caltech Sub-millimetre Observatory & the larger building of the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope. On the ridge at left (left to right) are the Canada- France-Hawaii telescope, the University of Arizona telescope & the silver dome of the United Kingdom Infrared Telescope (UKIRT). At centre foreground is NASA's Infrared Telescope Facility.
