PANAMA CITY, Panama — Standing on the western side of Plaza de la Independencia (or Plaza Mayor), the Catedral Metropolitana was built between 1688 and 1796. It is one of the largest of Central America's cathedrals and was badly neglected before undergoing major restoration in 2003.
Photograph by David Coleman. The Catedral Metropolitana, Panama City's main Catholic church, stands as a majestic centerpiece in the historic Casco Viejo district. Built in the early 19th century, its neoclassical design features a symmetrical facade with two imposing bell towers flanking the main entrance. The cathedral's stark white exterior contrasts sharply with the warm hues of surrounding colonial buildings. Located on Plaza de la Independencia, the cathedral occupies a prime position in Panama's old quarter. Its interior likely houses religious artworks and ornate altars, reflecting centuries of Panama's Catholic heritage. The cathedral's presence in Casco Viejo, a UNESCO World Heritage site, underscores its historical and cultural significance. As a functioning church and popular tourist attraction, the Catedral Metropolitana serves dual roles in modern Panama City. It continues to be a center of religious life while also offering visitors a glimpse into Panama's colonial past and architectural traditions. The cathedral's towering presence in the Casco Viejo skyline makes it a key landmark in Panama City's historic center.
