Albrecht Kossel (1853-1927) German physician. Kossel's full name was Ludwig Karl Martin Leonhard Albrecht Kossel. Kossel studied in Strasbourg and Rostock, graduating in 1878. Kossel was awarded the 1910 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine. The Nobel was awarded for Kossel's work on cell proteins and nucleic acids. His other achievements include discovering the amino acid histidine (1896) and the biochemical amino acid product agmatine (1910). This photograph is from the Bain News Service, one of the USA's earliest news picture libraries. The photographs date from the 1890s to the 1930s.
