Thomas Sonnet de Courval (1577-1627), French poet and satirist. Courval was part of the tradition known as Menippean satire in the style of the Roman poet Juvenal. This led to Courval being referred to as the 'Juvenal of Normandy'. Courval's first work was 'Satire Menippee' (1608). This woodcut portrait shows him at the age of 33, with the circular inscription referring to his medical degree. The French poetic text refers to his birthplace of Vire, his adolescence in Caen, his youth in Paris, and his France nationality. Artwork from Sonnet's work 'Satyre contre les charlatans et pseudomedecins' (1610), a work about quacks and medical charlatans.
