Transmitter on bee. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a miniature transmitter (blue) on the back of a honeybee (Apis mellifera). The transmitter has a unique radio-frequency, allowing the bee to be recognized by a reader at the entrance to its hive. In this way, scientists can monitor the duration and frequency of foraging flights, and the length of time spent inside the hive. Many bees can be tagged at one time, so the dynamics of the colony can be investigated. Honeybees are economically important as pollinators of many of the world's crops.
