Checking wheat for weevils. Scientist testing stored wheat for signs of a weevil infestation using a piece of equipment designed by Systelia Technologies (France). The equipment relies on passive acoustic technology to detect sounds that indicate the presence of several agricultural pests, including weevils. A weevil is a small beetle that infests a wide range of plants and crops. It has an elongated rostrum at the end of which are cutting mouthparts. These are used to bore through the outer layer of grain to gain access to the food within. Females lay their eggs within the grain to ensure a food supply for the developing larvae.
