But Fanching had suffered still more fromthe Mongol bombardment, and Alhaya,therefore, attacked it first. The garrisonoffered a determined resistance, and the fight-ing was continued in the streets. Not aman of the garrison escaped, and when theslaughter was over the Mongols found thatthey had only acquired possession of a massof ruins.
