Jurassic fish fossil. This pycnodont fish is classified as Macromesodon gibbosus. A small-to-medium-sized fish, its body was compressed laterally with an almost circular outline. Pycnodontiform fish lived mainly in shallow waters. They had special jaws with rounded and flattened teeth, well suited for grinding food. They fed on molluscs and crustaceans. This specimen is from the Jurassic Solnhofen Lithographic Limestone found in Bavaria, Germany. The Jurassic lasted from 201 million years ago to 145 million years ago.
