Super typhoon Haiyan. Computer-generated cut-away image of super typhoon Haiyan over the Philippine Sea in November 2013. The central islands of the Philippines are in the foreground. The Category 5 storm, with wind speeds up to 314 kilometres per hour, may be the strongest tropical cyclone ever to make landfall. It devastated large areas of the Philippines, particularly Samar Island and Leyte, affecting 9 million people. Over 5,500 people were killed and more than 12,000 injured. Based on data from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) instrument on NASA's Aqua satellite (infrared data used to determine cloud height), with night-time imagery from the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) on NASA/NOAA's Suomi NPP satellite.
