Abandoned air strip Egypt's Western Desert, Sahara


An abandoned air strip marked by way of petrol cans in the desert – relics of the Long Range Desert Group founded by Ralph Bagnold in June 1940. The group led by Bagnold and other pre war explorers such as Patrick Clayton, Kennedy Shaw and Douglas Newbold patrolled the desert learning the art of desert war fare. LRDG.   Count Laszlo Almasy – the real English Patient.  Michael Ondaatjes book The English Patient based on Almasy. In 1932 he initiated the Zerzura expedition into the Gilf Kebir combining the use of cars with light aircraft. He travelled with Patrick Clayton and Squadron Leader Penderel. As a  reserve officer in the Hungarian Airforce he was later posted to Rommels Africa Korps as a spotter. This enraged his earlier fellow travellers such as Clayton who became the LRDG.
