An old plan of Coldbath Fields Prison, formerly known as the Middlesex House of Correction or Clerkenwell Gaol . It was known colloquially the Steel. Situated in Mount Pleasant, Clerkenwell, London. Founded in the early 1600's, completely rebuilt 1794, extended 1850. Prisoners were generally on short sentences of up to two years with separate quarters for women (and children),men, felons, those guilty of misdemeanors and vagrants. It was originally run by magistrates including the corrupt Joseph Merceron. In 1850, women and children moved to Tothill Fields, Bridewell . The prison employed
