Louis XVI-style, giltwood & upholstered settee The upholstery on this sofa is part of a set of tapestries & upholstery alluding to the War of American Independence & the part played by the French in achieving it. It was woven by the order of King Louis XVI & probably intended as a gift to George Washington, though the Revolution prevented the transaction from materializing. This series comprises 4 panels, representing America, Europe, Africa & Asia, along with 28 covers, eventually mounted on 19th intended for the backs & seats of 2 settees & 12 armchairs. This set is the second of only 2 weavings. Standen illustrates the oil sketch, composition reversed, painted by Le Barbier for the back of the present sofa, p. 590.
