Water depth over much of the lake rarely exceeds 2-5 m, although there are some circumscribed areas with depths of up to 4-0 m. Most of the lake is bordered by flat savannah-bush, but to the north and east there are areas of papyrus swamp extending, albeit as narrow fingers, for some 15 km from the lake edge.
