This is the scene at Gosport Navy Yard in Norfolk, Virginia, on Sunday morning, April 21, 1861, just after Union Captain Hiram Paulding gave the signal to burn all at the Navy Yard to keep them from coming into the hands of the Confederates. The large vessel on the right is the Pennsylvania. On the extreme left is seen the bow of the United States. In the center is the Pawnee steam frigate, and the Cumberland with the Yankee at her side. This 1866 engraving is based on a picture that appeared in Harper's Weekly on May 11, 1861.
