When eighteen years old be offered a col-lection of original sketches of city life and scenes tothe Saturday Museum, of Philadelphia, and whenthey were published and paid for he determined tobecome an artist. His first collection of sketches at-tracted the attention of New York and Philadelphiapublishers. In 1848 he was engaged by the AmericanArt Union to design a series of illustrations for Wash-ington Irving*! works, and, removing to New ^ orkcity, he produced the familiar designs in the Bketch-Book, Rip Van Winkle, the KniekerbcHistory of New York, Hie Life of Washington,and others. He also illustrated several of WilliamGilmore Simmss novels, and about this time com- 630 OBITUAKIES, pleted the outline drawings to Judds Margaret,which was published in 1856. On the completion ofthe Irving series of illustrations, he received natteringoffers from publshers to go to London, but declinedon account of his many home engagements. His nextgreat work was the series of five hundred sketchesdrawn to illustrate James Fenimore Coopers novels,a series noted for originality, power of expression,and quaint humor. During the civil war he designedhistorical sketches in water-color, which were repro-duced by the Government on the greenback bills, andat the close of the war went to Europe. On his re-turn in 1868 he published Sketches Abroad withPen and Pencil. For several years thereafter heexecuted orders for book illustrations, but gave the larg
