An old image of a traditional town crier, announcer or bellman (from a 1924 postcard).They were originally an officer of a royal court or public authority who made public announcements, pronouncements or related items of news, events or advertising, (, lost animals & children, weddings, public sales or official gatherings) In later years, some men (occasionally women) were appointed / approved by councils or took it upon themselves to take part in the role, often in distinctive costumes and ringing a bell to attract attention acompamied by the cry "Oyez" or "Hear Ye " three times.
