Pediatrics. . SSOR OF ANATOMY, DENVER AND GROSS COLLEGE OF MEDICINE JSURGEON TO THE MERCY SANITARIUM. A skiagraph shows the shadows cast upon a photographicplate by the denser structures with which the X-rays come in con-tact and requires that the rays have sufficient penetration to passthrough the area and be capable of outlining the shadows upon afluorescent screen. As these rays diverge from the anode of thetube it is absolutely essential for the correct representation of theexisting relations of the parts in question, that the target beaccurately focused over the exact seat of suspected fracture orinjury and that the central rays strike the object and the X-rayplate at a right angle. Having taken these precautions in ad- 548 I. B. PERKINS justing the tube and having placed it a sufficient distance from theplate to prevent magnifying the structures, we can depend uponthe skiagraph for a practically accurate representation of the flalrelations of the parts examined. It is the lack of attention tc. No. IV C. W., aged seven. Fracture of right femur. Firm union. Skiagraphtaken ten months after injury. Antero-posterior view. these details that has thrown discredit upon the reliability of cer-tain skiagraphs; it is not the fault of the X-ray, it is entirely thefault of the X-ray operator. FRACTURE OF THE FEMUR 549 As it requires some experience to interpret properly the sig-nificance of the different shadings found in an X-ray picture, Itake the liberty of briefly explaining the skiagraphs in the orderin which they are enumerated.
