A statue of Stanislaw Leszczynski in the Place Stanislas, Nancy, France

, Nancy, Departement Meurthe-et-Moselle, France - A statue of Stanislaw Leszczynski in the Place Stanislas. Leszczynski was the Polish king between 1704 and 1709, after Augustus II the Strong. In 1709 Augustus II returned to the Polish throne, and Leszczynski regained the crown after his death in 1733. However, he could not prevail in the War of the Polish Succession and was forced to emigrate. After his renunciation of Poland, he was compensated in 1737 with the Duchy of Upper Lorraine and Bar. Nancy owes this man one of the most beautiful squares in Europe, Place Stanislas, named after the king. The square was added to the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 1983 along with Place de la Carriere and Place d'Alliance, two other components of the same architectural ensemble.
