Itwas at New ^Madrid that Colonel vSwayne took com-mand of the regiment and made a daring and success-ful reconnoisance around that Confederate strono-- o hold, a movement which contributed largeU? towardits subsequent capture. After the battle of Shilohthe regiment took part in the fifty days gradual ap-proach to Corinth, participating in three importantengagements, and in the final battle which resultedin the capture of that important position.
