An antique First World War postcard entitled, “Lieut. William Leefe Robinson. VC - He attacked an enemy airship under circumstances of great difficulty and danger, and sent it crashing to the ground as a flaming wreck”. Dating from 1916. On the night of 2/3 September 1916, the German zeppelin was the first airship shot down over England. It was brought down at Cuffley, Hertfordshire by Lt. William Leefe Robinson, Royal Flying Corps who was awarded the Victoria Cross for this action. For many years the airship was misidentified as
