Double Bubble D8 aircraft model being tested in a wind tunnel. This advanced design concept was developed for NASA by a team led by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). The aircraft has a very wide fuselage to provide extra lift, low-swept wings to reduce drag and weight, and engines sitting above the fuselage and aft of the wings to block some noise from reaching the ground. It would fly at Mach , carrying 180 passengers. Designs were presented to NASA's Aeronautics Research Mission Directorate in 2010, and the aircraft could be in operation by around 2035. Photographed in 2013 in the MIT Wright brothers wind tunnel, Massachusetts, USA.
