The magnetic field produced by the coils L and L-1 combine and act upon the exploringcoil L-2, the position of which will be more clearly understood from the photograph, , which also shows the rectangular coils to be connected to the loops of the aerial. The ex-ploring coil is placed inside the antenna coils and is turned by the handle on the top of the oscillations induced in L-2 by the oscillatory current flowing in the coils L and L-1 istransferred to the inductance coil of the local detector circuit L-4 by the coil L-3. The coil L-2, the variable condenserV, and the coil L-3, constitute an inter-mediate circuit similar to that employedin the well-known Marconi valve coupling between the coils L-3 andL-4 is varied by a knob mounted on theside of the tuned receiver.
