The stabilizing resistance protects the motors againstsudden changes in line voltage, while the axle generatorsprotect against variations in grade, which would other-wise tend to vary the speed. In case of a suddenreduction in line voltage, which would be followed bya heavy increase in the regenerated current, theincreased voltage drop in the stabilizing resistanceresulting from this immediately cuts down the fieldcurrent and the voltage generated by the main motorsufficiently to limit the increase in regenerated cur-rent to a safe value.
