El Hierro power station and reservoir. This reservoir is part of the Gorona del Viento hybrid wind/pumped hydro storage system on El Hierro, one of the Canary Islands. Five wind turbines produce up to megawatts of wind power to supply electricity for the island's population, and for three water desalination plants. The system stores surplus wind power by pumping water from this lower reservoir up 700 metres to the crater of an extinct volcano. When there is no wind, or when demand exceeds supply, water is released from the crater back to the reservoir to generate electricity. Water in the basin is pumped back up to the crater when there is excess wind power.
