Richard Stallman, American software developer. Stallman (born 1953) is founder and president of the Free Software Foundation, an organisation dedicated to providing free software and promoting the 'copyleft' movement of universal freedom to distribute and modify software without restriction. Stallman, a graduate of Harvard University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA, developed a free operating system called GNU in 1985. In 2008, this operating system, combined with the Linux kernel, is still being used and developed by a large proportion of computer users.
