Phrenology head regions. 19th-century artwork of front, back, side and top views of a human head, with 34 numbered areas named in the key at left of phrenological characters ascribed to those regions. The list is divided into effective and intellectual sections, and subdivided into propensities and sentiments, and into perceptive and effective characters. Phrenology, popularised in the 19th century, is the now discredited study of the bumps on the human skull. The claim was that this revealed aspects of a person's character. This page is from the third edition (1828, first published 1824) of 'Elements of phrenology' by British phrenologist George Combe (1788-1858).
