It has about8,000 inhabitants, a dozen churches (of which those of the Free Baptistsare most numerous), capital schools, half-a-dozen banks, two newspapers,a public library, and a stately monument to commemorate the onehundred and seventeen soldiers out of its contingent of seven hundredand sixty-five (one-tenth of the population), who died on the Southernbattle-fields.
