By WILLIAM WARREN POTTER, M. D , Buffalo, N. V. The following case will serve to indicate a somewhat novelway in which the Allen Surgical Pump may be employed withadvantage :. THE ALLEN SURGICAL PUMP. On the evening of the fifteenth day of June, 1888,1 was calledto visit Mrs. X. as a consultant. She was found to be suffering 122 A NEW USE OF THE ALLEN SURGICAL PUMP. with peritonitis, probably of a puerperal origin, and seemed to bein extremis. Her pulse was 140; temperature, ninety-seven anda-half; surface bathed with clammy perspiration ; breathing shortand hurried, and she was suffering great pain withal. There wasgreat distention of the abdomen from flatus, which had resistedall methods to effect its relief, among which were repeated attemptsat rectal catheterization, warm water injections, etc. An effortwas made to pass a soft rubber rectal tube, which met withopposition after it had passed the sphincter less than threeinches.
